No system sounds-help

I have XP Professional and about a week ago all of my system sounds
disappeared. I have spent hours on this problem. The sign on and off
sounds, email notifier, error ding, etc. - nothing plays. When I have gone
into my control panel and the trouble shooting of system sounds, an error
message comes up that says "windows cannot play the sound%System
Root%\media\windowsXPerror(or ding,hardware insert)wav. Your sound card may
be in use". So I'm concluding the wav. files aren't working?

I have also received some videos where the accompanying sounds do not play.

Can anyone help?

Not me, I'm afraid. Something (but what???) seems to be wrong with the
set-up of your sound card, so that neither system sounds nor content can be
played. Most likely you can't play MIDI files either.

Check Control_Panel | System | Hardware | Device_Manager for a clue.

Thank you for your reply. I identified and fixed the problem. Somehow the
sound play back default got switched - I have no idea how unless it occurred
during the latest updates. Any how it's good to have the sound back!

I went into Control Panel/Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices/click on Sound.
My default is SoundMax and that had been switched to Modem #1. I switched it
back to SoundMax and the sounds returned.

I hope this helps.

Sorry! I clicked on Audio NOT Sound. Didn't want to confuse us any more
than we need to be. :)
