no sounds in messenger 6.2

i installed the new version of msn messenger 6.2 tonight,
and when i went to change the default sounds for mail and
contacts online (etc.), it stopped using sounds
altogether. i can go to sounds in my control panel, and
click the sounds i want for each function, even hit
apply, but when i close the box out, i stil have no
sound, and when i go back to the sounds dialog, it lists
no sounds selected once again. i uninstalled messenger
and reinstalled it once again, but that made no change to
the problem. running windows xp /sp1 ...

This problem was actually [supposed to be] fixed in MSN Messenger 6.2.0137 -- if you click
the Help menu, then About, which version are you using?

i'm using 6.2.0137. i came up with my own workaround
after severl unistalls. i renamed all the sound files
included with messenger to (filename)-old.wav then copied
the sound files i wanted to play to the messenger folder
and renamed them to (filename).wav. so far everything
works well.
