No sound

I have speakers connected to the computer and they used
to work perfectly well on Windows 98 and Xp Pro. Then we
caught that virus and installed XP home. Only...no
sound...the speakers work but nothing comes out of there.
We tried to install them but the comp. doesn't recongnize
them or see them as "new hardware" or anything. How can I
fix this?
