I have lost sound altogether on a Windows 98 SE PC and can not get it back.
If I go into Multimedia in control panel, no sound devises are present.
reinstalling drivers and I have tried two different sound cards from other
computers and reinstalled drivers but the sound cards are not recognised.
The first is an old ISA SB16 (not plug and play) and the other is a SB Live
PCI. I have the most upto date drivers for both and have reinstalled Windows
98 but still nothing.

I have built my own PC's before and installed cards many times but this
absolutely baffles me.

Has anyone got any ideas short of throwing everything away!!??

Try putting the sound card into a different slot. It could be a bad slot
contact or a dead slot problem. Also if there is an older type daughter card
(display card or modem) .......remove them first before installing the sound
card. Hope this helps.

Pull out the sound card. Reboot into safe mode. Delete any sound cards
you find in the Device Mangler. Reboot to normal mode. Run any
soundcard setup program you have. Shutdown and install the card.
Reboot and hope it works!!!
