no sound

Ive checked the drivers...working properly. Checked out everything really.
Did a dxdiag test...tells me sound is working. Nothing muted or turned down.
Doesnt seem much point in uninstalling drivers and re-downloading if they are
showing as working ok. So, what else can I do about this?
 
Has the sound been working before, and just all of a sudden stopped? Or is it
a new computer or new sound card or something?
 
yes, working before, then xp clean installed (reinstalled) and SP2 installed
off a disk.
