no sound whatsoever

i am running xp pro fully updated. my sound card is realtek audio ac'97. i
have no sound on computer. i have tried playing cd's,dvd's mp3disc and there
is even no system sounds.when i play a song with wmp9,it says sound is
playing but no sound comes out of speakers. i have checked that speakers are
connected correctly.i have checked in device manager and it says realtek
ac'97 is enabled and device is working correctly. i have updated driver for
sound card.then i rolled back driver. still no sound.i coupled the monitor
speakers instead of external speakers.still no sound.i coupled record deck
to line in socket.still nothing.any advice would be greatly appreciated.i
have done system restore to before the problem arose.still nothing

thanks for that info,will. my sound card was on board the motherboard,so i
added a separate card and cured it that way.thanks for the info.i appreciate
it
