no sound in left speaker

Hello,
I have a relatively new machine running XP Pro (P4 2.8G, Asus P4P800
motherboard).
For some strange reason, sound only comes from one speaker. I've tested both
the onboard Soundmax sound card and a Creative PCI sound card.
All settings appear to be correct (inlcuding the balance....).
Any ideas?
Thanks

What kind of speakers do you have? If you have a common 1 pin PC speaker,
you may be trying to use the wrong jack in the sound card.

I have an old pair of Yamaha speakers. Internal Amplifier.
The connections are correct.

The speakers work on other systems, and other speakers have the same problem
on this system.

Sounds like a bad input. Try wiggling the 1/8" jack around and see if
it changes to both speakers in certain positions. I get this sometimes
with my headphones on my 1/4" jack :(

Have you gone to control panel and checked "sounds and audio devices"? There
may be an answer in there. My system is different to yours, so I can't tell
you exactly what to look for. Explore the possibilities.

Checked.
Could it be related to the board?

Did you set up the speakers in Control Panel> Sounds and Audio? Many
speaker settings on the Volume page. Select the type of speakers under
Advanced. A default install of XP sets this up very conservatively and the
user should adjust it.

THis post is so old, I'm sure you have teh problem fixed by now. But...I had
a similar problem. It was software related. I uninstalled all, and I mean
ALL, the audio software I had, rebooted, reinstalled, and BAM...worked fine.
Hope your problem is, or will be, fixed soon.

Wanted to sign up just to post this - I had the same trouble for ages before figuring it out.

Your audio connections at the motherboard may be bad. Open up your case and trace the wire from the jack to the mobo... You will likely find the cables are labled and by visual investigation might find the problem.

Mine was hanging out quite obviously and since there were only two "L" labelled cables, I put it next to the other one... bingo!

No soud on the right/left output channel

Hi,

Had the same problem, checked every before solving the motherboard's audio headers/caps where in the wrong pins.

IE. read your motherboard manul or follow on mobo lettering to makesure the headers or caps are in the correct pins.
I had to fix my header into the correct pins. i.e. AUD_F_R and AUD_RET_R are pin 5,6 on my board (which is right speaker channel etc.) and AUD_F_L and AUD_RET_L (which is the left channel output for speakers etc.)

This was a new motherboard and I had a good clue it was mobo problem after checking the exturnal stuff and software.

If you don't have a manual of motherboard instructions am sure you can get it on the suppliers website.

Hope this works for yeah guys, usually a common problem for new installing of motherboard's or newly bought refurbish pc etc.

Good luck! :)
