Anyone ever hear of this? The media player sound has shut down. There are no
problems or conflicts that I can find in the control panel. Sound works fine
otherwise, just can't play MP3's and movie sounds.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. The same thing happened to me yesterday while I was watching a DVD.
Now my Media Player won't play any sounds, from any source. The normal
windows sounds and Apple Quicktime still work. It's only the Windows Media
Player that won't. I thought it might be software related, since everything
else plays, so I reinstalled M.Player (version 10, previously 9.5) but it
made no difference. Still no sound, even though the graphic equalizer shows
that sound is playing.

HELP!!!

I just managed to get mine going again. What I did was run the following
diagnostics. Everything tested fine, and when I went back and opened a video
file with Media Player, the sound was suddenly back again even though the
diagnostics were uneventful.

Try to play the file in Mplayer2:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type mplayer2.
2. Click OK.
3. On the File menu, click Open, and then select the media in question.

• Run the DirectX diagnostics as Windows Media Player is very dependent on
DirectX:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type dxdiag.
2. Click OK.
3. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click the Sound tab, and then click Test
DirectSound.• If the system cannot pass the DirectSound tests, it usually
indicates a problem with the sound card drivers. Normal playback of content
in Windows Media Player will not be possible.

I ran these tests. Everything checked out fine. For some unknown reason,
my Media Player sound is now playing again.
