no sound device

i lost my sound device somewhere. i can see video, but
no sound. i can't get any sound from my cd either. i
plugged in an external usb sound card and,.. nothing.
winMedia player also says that i have no sound device.

does anyone have any advice for me?

Reinstall and update the sound card driver.
