No Sound Device

I installed a SoundBlaster card when my onboard sound stopped working. The
device is shown to be working properly on the device manager. The computer
detects the new hardware when I installed it (a couple times now) I install
all the drivers and the card is working when I run the test from Creative
Diagnostics. However No Audio Device is shown on the sounds menu from the
control panel. I have the BIOS set to disable onboard audio. I've
reinstalled multi-media per Creative's instructions. I've uninstalled
everything and reinstalled. Try as I might I can find no way to get an audio
device to show up. They are all grayed-out and no pull down menu works.
There are no device conflicts. When I run Belarc Advsior it shows the card
for multi-media.

Creative has thrown up their hands and they say it's a Microsoft issue.
Please help... I am not a rocket scientist but I am no novice either.

Ensure the PCI soundcard is in the slot FURTHEST away from the AGP or PCI-E
slot.

The first time I installed it I had it in the very last (bottom) card, far
away from anything like the video card. I moved it up two slots, surrounded
by a couple port cards. Plug & Play is enabled. The systems knows the
card's there. I don't know if I should try to "repair" XP.
