No sound, and no help anywhere

I have no sound in XP. No system, no media player, no
CD. I think it occurred when I upgraded to WMP v9. I'd
use system restore, but when I pick an earlier date,
after restore runs its course, it says "Windows Restore
could not restore to the specified date. No changes were
made to your computer." ??
I've installed the latest driver (sound card is onboard
AC 97), I've disabled, enabled, even went to the BIOS and
disabled and enabled. I've booted, rebooted, checked all
of the sound settings. No conflicts, volume's on,
plugged in. When I disable the sound device, the windows
default sounds play on the PC internal speaker. I've
been to Kelley's Korner, no help for me there.
Suggestions?

Start -> Run -> Type services.msc and hit enter. Now go down to Windows Audio and see if it's disabled. If it is then enable it.

Ok, I gave it a try. It says Started and Automatic.
I don't have any device warnings in hardware for sounds,
says everything is functioning properly. Any other
suggestions?
