No Show/Hide

Hello there: I have windows xp and office xp - in Word I have a toolbar
button for Show/Hide, but it doesn't work. I can see all the formatting
symbols all the time (which is what I want) but I can't switch it off
whenever I want to. I click the button but it doesn't toggle the feature.

The Show/Hide ¶ button merely toggles between display of all nonprinting
characters and the specific ones you have checked on the View tab of Tools |
Options. If you have them all checked, then the button will not appear to do
anything.
