Quite often this behaviour is caused by faulty RAM. If you are comfortable
with it, unplug your computer from the power, open it up and make sure the
memory sticks are seated firmly. Try to reboot again and if you still can't,
check how many memory sticks you have. If you have more than one, try
removing and replacing them one at a time. If one of them is bad your
machine may boot when the bad one is removed.
Hope this helps.

Hi.. they are sticks? If I can find them I have no problem checking them.
My poor computer... I have it all backed up on an external but... I cannot
find the boot disk.. everything i look at says... "floppies" ugh.. whats up
with that ... tried to make a boot disk with SD nay did not work.. drag.
so I will talke the cover off.. and have a gander... I had this work of
art built for me ( a pretty gifted guy at a computer store! ) with mega
everything in it..
I could cry but I will give it a try.. :)

If you don't even know what RAM looks like, take your machine to the "pretty
gifted guy" if you feel he is a competent computer tech. If he works for a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place, I'd pick somewhere else though.

It sounds like you have hardware issues and not meaning to offend you in any
way, you're not going to be able to troubleshoot/fix this yourself.

To you, does rebooting mean the same thing as returning to the logon/
welcome screen where you can click on a user name?

Rebooting would be equivalent of restarting Windows which is not the
same as clicking a user name (in regular or Safe Mode) and being
returned to the logon screen to click the user name again.

you might try to boot
up with a winxp cd.

then initiate the recovery
console and run a check
disk /p and a fixboot.

had the exact same problem with my computer, except I did get a virus. I was
getting pop ups so I know I had one. I did leave it on one night not
connected to the internet and the next morning it just kept rebooting,
without being able to boot in safe mode. Tried to reload xp, no good, tried
reboot disk , no good, nothing seemed to work. I now have a new desktop
running vista but was able to retrieve a lot of info before I left my
computer on all night. Good Luck

ndkco - please read my earlier post and tell us what is your
definition of "reboot"?

To me, returning to the logon screen does not equal reboot.

What you describe could have been a familiar issue with a
straightforward solution.

Too late for you! But, it would help somebody else if you can provide
the details.

Maybe rebooting is the wrong term. What happens is that the system keeps
going to the startup screen that allows you the way you want to start.
regular statup, safe mode etc. , except you have no control, it says system
will restart in normal mode in 30 secs. Again you cannot change this setting
no control, and it goes through the motion and eventually ends up back to
this page and everything starts all over again.
