This is a desktop computer running xp pro. I have power options set to shut
down drives and monitor after a set period and this works fine. However if I
go to start/turn off computer/standby it leaves me a desktop background
without icons and
only way to recover is pulling power plug.
Am I missing understanding a difference between these modes? or?

Hi

Why are you trying to put a desktop into standby? That option is normally
used for Laptops to save the battery.

Standby turns off everything but part of the processor, and keyboard. APM
turns off the monitor and drives. You probably lack some needed component of
standby, and are running a "Standard PC"

Look at device manager, "computer" , ACPI, Properties

Yes Will I am not running a laptop. What I am trying to do is put the
drives and the monitor into standby IMMEDIATELY without waiting for the
time I have selected in “power properties” where they go into standby after
20 minutes. Perhaps there is a better way?

The ACPI properties do call for a standard PC. I ASSumed that Dell made
systems that contained all the components for standby but as Will said
that's only for laptops. Guess I will just let run the short extra time
before shutting monitor and drives off.
Thanks
