No Optical Drive Shows up

Here's a strange one...

If I boot up my laptop with a CD or DVD in the optical drive,
everything works normally. HOWEVER, If I boot up my laptop with NO CD
or DVD in the optical drive, I cannot use said optical drive until I
reboot with a disk of any sort in the drive.

I removed the drivers for the optical drive and everything worked
normal and fine until the first time I rebooted with a disk of any sort
in the optical drive, now it's back to it's old habits again.

Any thoughts on this strange happening would help.

Thanks,
HB

Internal or External?
Try changing the drive letters.
It is strange but I have seen where Windows like to use the next sequential
letter of the alphabet and will give a drive (especially an external drive)
the letter of a drive already in use. DON"T CHANGE THE C Drive letter though!
