no network/internet on 1 pc

Hi,
I got 2 pcs, linked together through a switch, and have internet shared. My
modem is also connected to such switch. I had to format my dad's pc a few
days ago, and when I tried to connect to the internet or use the network,
nothing happened. I did the same to my pc a few days earlier but everything
worked fine.
I noticed is that there's been a change on my switch.Prior to formatting
dad's pc, only the LNK/ACT button was switched on, while the other two
(DUP/COL and 10/100M) were off. Now, they're all switched on. I don't know
whether this is the problem, but I thought it might help.
We both have Windows XP, incl. SP2.
