Sundry upgrades (on ancient Compaq Presario 7000,
viz. new DVD drive and USB.v.2 card and 2nd HDD)
included an extra 256 Mb RAM, which WinXP (SP3)
misliked and said so, leaving me with no keyboard or
mouse function. So I powered off and removed the
extra RAM and restarted -- but I still have no KB or
mouse control. What could I try next ?

Are you certain that the correct RAM was removed?

Next you might want to try pulling the cables off the new DVD drive before a
power-up, and then examine the BIOS settings before the boot sequence starts
to see if anything appears unusual.

Are the mouse and KB PS2 or USB2 connected? I had to buy a PS2 to USB cable
to use my old units on my new computer.

This was an accidental coincidence -- flaky backup
Dell keyboard (pending thorough cleaning of preferred
Logitech kb). Mind you, it helps to plug kb and mouse
into the correct sockets.

FYI implementing SP3 so completely wrecked my wireless
network that the simplest cure was System Restore to Monday
i.e. SP2 (customized over the previous 18 months, hence
preferred.)

There was a nice bonus: Monday's date was before I installed
the new USB card drivers. When System was Restored to Monday three
or four queries appeared in Device Manager, but when I selected
the first one there was a sound like popping cork, and it reinstalled
its own drivers unasked, and so did all the others, with the pop
sound each time.
