"no more new fonts may be applied in this workbook"

I have a relatively large excel (2000) workbook
(spreadsheet 4.2 MB) with several charts (about 200)
within the workbook. A lot of objects have been copied,
pasted, added, deleted, resized, etc. Some of the charts
themselves have been copied and modified as needed.

The problem is the message "no more new fonts may be
applied in this workbook" that effectively prevents any
further work on the charts.

Unchecking "auto scale" on the "format chart area" menu
just makes the object(s) in the chart change fonts but
does not "free" the spreadsheet, so the same message comes
back.

Any suggestions to avoid the need to re-create the charts?
Or having to split the charts on to 2 or more workbooks?
The charts are linked to a PowerPoint presentation. This
means I have to re-link the charts on to new PowerPoint
slides.
