No More FP Extensions For Linux Servers

D

Dick

I just received a notification from my ISP (CableOne in Arizona) that
Microsoft will no longer support FrontPage server extensions on Linux
servers. Bummer. I wonder how much of the country will be affected
by this decision?

However, the most recent version of the 2002 extensions can be used as long as your web
hosting company decides to use them.

The whole world is affected. It doesn't mean your host will discontinue
them, it just means they are no longer supported by MS, and they are no
longer available for download.

Here is the message I received from the ISP.

"Microsoft has recently decided to stop supporting the FrontPage file
extensions for use on Linux based web servers. As CableONE.Net has
changed to Linux based web servers we can no longer support the
FrontPage software for publishing a web page. This will affect
customers using their personal web page space provided by
CableONE.Net. FrontPage may still be used to create the web page,
however some more advanced features may not function and all files
will need to be uploaded using the CableONE.Net ftp access."

Dick,
You can setup frontpage to comply with the new restrictions by setting
things in the TOOLS->OPTIONS->Compatiability tab. FP will then not offer to
let you use the FP extension components automagically. Most of the FPSE
components have replacements available in pre-written javascript, in
pre-written php scripts and so forth. FP is still an amazingly powerful and
flexible editor even w/o the FPSE add-ins.

Thanks,
Tom Miller

Tom -

I don't seem to have those options in Tools. I have three tabs.
General, Configure Editors and Reports View. FP2000.

I find this in FP2002. It might not be in FP2003. However, I typo-ed. Its
not in "Options" its in "Page Options" look for the Compatibility Tab. It
has also sorts of neat things you can cause FP to do/not allow. There are 2
caveats. 1) It won't change what a wizard wants to generate. 2) It won't
let you retro-fit a website. You use this trick to develop a new website
from scratch. Copy the old pages in thru the clip-board (might work).

Sorry for the typo....

That's unfortunate. Just because Microsoft is no longer supporting the FPSE
on Linux doesn't mean they will automatically stop working.

That's what I thought too, Kathleen. I think I will write them.
