No Map Custom Fields box shows in File/Import

I'm trying to import my e-mail address list that I have in Excel into
Outlook's Contacts folder.

No Map Custom Fields box shows up during this process to direct the process
in chosing the Excel fields and directing what fields to put them into the
Contacts folder.

The Help troubleshooter says a "The Following Actions Will Be Performed" box
will show up, and I am to check the Import box. Can't find or ever see this
box either.

What's going on? Can't use this if I can't bring my e-mail addresses into it.

It worked in Outlook Express. Maybe I should try using it instead of
Outlook? What the hell's the difference in these (other than a fancy
Calendar in Outlook)?
