Hi all,

This problem annoy me a lot:

After Windows XP installed, I install my programs and it works fine in the
beginning. However, at some point I install many programs later (I forget
which program is the last one), the login screen does not display and it just
shows a blank blue screen with a mouse curser after restart.

The login screen may appear again after several reboot (50%)

Any ideas? Or point me to the right direction to troubleshoot the login
process?

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Boot the computer in Safe Mode. Press the F8 key between the BIOS POST screen and XP actually starting to load. You'll be asked if you want to use Safe Mode or System Restore. Choose System Restore and go back to a point before you did the software installs. Then install the programs one at a time, to find the one that's causing problems.

I'm afraid I can't do so:

First, I'd turned off "system restore" before installing the software
Second, even I press F8 to enter Safe Mode. It always has the same problem
and just show a black screen with mouse curser after loading ....mup.sys for
the last line.

Any suggestion?

At this point, your options are a repair installation and/or a clean install.

Repair the Windows XP Installation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

Remove any floppy disks and ZIP disks from their respective drives. Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
