No Keyboard

I have been playing around with the parental controls and user accounts.
This morning my computer would not wake up. I shut it down via the power
button. When 'resuming' came on I had no keyboard. The keyboard is fine
because I went into the bios and used it. But when I come to my logon screen
I can't type my password. The mouse is fine. The 'Num Lock' light is on but
I have no keyboard. I logged in with the 'guest' account but still no
keyboard. How can I get my keyboard back? HELP!! Vista Ultimate x64. Thanks.

I can't even boot from the Vista CD. Keyboard doesn't work. Can't get into
safe mode, keyboard doesn't work. Only place the keyboard works is in the
bios.

In the bios I put everything back to default settings. No luck. Anyone heard
of this before? Thanks.

I am able to logon using the 'ease of access' options and the onscreen
keyboard. Tried to install new drivers but it is reported that the device is
working correctly and no better drivers available. Can a keybord work in the
bios but be broken with the OS? This is crazy.

Can you get to Device Manager?
If so, try removing the keyboard from the device list, then reboot to allow
Vista to "rediscover" the keyboard.
I hear you about the present keyboard working in the BIOS, but have you
tried a different keyboard? If the current is USB, try PS2, etc.

Most common cause is that the keyboard is an USB unit - and has lost
"activation" in BIOS.
(Although direction keys will work while in setup).

pvdg42 and AJR, thanks for the replies but it's a PS2 keyboard. I changed
keyboards and that didn't help. Got a hotfix from MS and that didn't help. I
am reinstalling now to see if that helps. I was going to do a repair from
the CD but it seems to be doing a complete install. Didn't have that much
information on the new version of Vista so it doesn't matter. Wii let you
know what happens. If this doesn't help, I may be calling HP. Thanks again.

Getting into the Bios does not require any drivers. Keyboard use, under
Windows, requires drivers. It seems that in your "playing around" you may
have locked yourself from using the keyboard or deactivated the drivers.

This is likely an option, as some people use computers in kiosk mode and
don't want anyone to have access to either mouse or keyboard functions
(informational only, PowerPoint presentations etc.).

I connected another keyboard to the computer and got the same results. It
didn't work. I took the original keyboard to another computer and it worked
fine. The keyboard works fine with the BIOS. I called MS.

This is embarrasing. I try a 3rd keyboard and while the tech is on the
phone, the 3rd keyboard starts working. Still I think something is wrong.
Oh, well. Thanks for the replies. I am now reformatting and am going to
reinstall. Wish I'd tried the 3rd keyboard a little earlier.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with your keyboard!
