No internet access since sp2 upgrade?

Ok, this is so frustrating. Downloaded sp2 and now my internet access is
non-existant. The cable company sent a tech to troubleshoot the problem.
The problem is sp2. The diagnostic equipment showed good connectivity, the
cable is good, the modem is good. It appears that my computer is dropping
over 50% of packets sent. I tried reseting the winsocket catalog, but the
error message I get is "winsocket reset catalog command does not exist." We
tried ipconfig renew and reset and nothing happened. Something has been
corrupted in my system due to sp2. Prior to this download everything worked
"wonderfully" Please help, as I may take a baseball bat to my computer:)

First try updating the drivers for your network card. You should get the
drivers from the card mftr.'s website (or the OEM's site if you have an
OEM machine). Do not apply drivers from Windows Update.

Then check your firewall. If using a third-party firewall, you may need
to upgrade it to work well with SP2. Our Sygate Personal firewalls
needed to be updated and that solved the network connectivity problems
we were having on the XPSP2 boxen.

Make sure your computer is 100% virus and malware-free as having malware
on your computer can definitely negatively impact Internet
connectivity. I've seen plenty of instances where malware was on a
computer prior to SP2 and working well. After SP2, the increased
security features caused the spyware to malfunction, causing problems.

Malke, Thank you for your time and effort it is greatly appreciated.
I went back and reloaded my Windows XP upgrade. Everything seems to operate
much better, except I am still not able to connect to the internet. The
error message I get is to the effect "cannot reset IP address." Cable uses
DHCP and evidently whatever has happened is not allowing the IP address to be
reset when I turn the computer on and try to access the internet with
internet explorer. Any ideas?

The same ideas I gave you in my first post, none of which included
reinstalling SP2. Here they are again for your convenience:
