No icons showing on desktop

Windows 2000 Professional had been working fine for 6
months on IBM Thinkpad. Last Wednesday, icons did not show
up when computer turned on. Rebooting has not helped. Only
thing visible is wallpaper.

Any thoughts?

This means the shell is hanging. Try booting in safe mode. Same behavior?
