no icons on start up

Hi,
Sometimes when I start up my XP machine non of the icons appear, nor does
the task bar but my background picture does. I can't right click on the desk
top but the mouse will move around the screen. I have to restart the
machine, sometimes 3 times before my icons appear.
Does anybody have any idea what is causing this problem?

I would do a good scan for spyware with Adaware and SpyBot Search&Destroy,
and also a virus scan. Also check your Startup folder and see what's in
there and make sure there's nothing 'foreign' trying to start.
