no home network available

I have
1.a wireless laptop running Vista Ultimate.
2.an ethernet wired desktop running Vista Ultimate.
3.a SM8014W-G gateway.
The laptop and the desktop can connect to the internet with no poroblems. I
can ping the laptop(192.168.0.102) from the desktop. I get "request timed
out" when I ping the desktop(192.168.1.2) from the laptop.
When I map the network, my gateway icon on each computer shows up as a
different address. The laptop gateway icon has 192.168.0.1, whereas the
desktop gateway icon has 192.168.1.1.
I have double and triple checked all the Vista settings for network
discovery, file and printer sharing, they are set correctly on both devices.
If I connect the laptop to my desktop through a crossover cable, I do have a
network available on which I can share all files and printers without any
problem.
I have contacted my ISP (Rogers) numerous times and they told me I had to
contact the manufacturer(SMC) as they only provide support for connectivity.
I contacted SMC and they told me that Rogers had to provide support as Rogers
has all the administrator rights to my gateway. I contacted Rogers and they
told me that I had to "use a PRIVATE IP address and not a PUBLIC IP address".
Umm, isn't the 192. series the private IP's? Needless to say I don't
believe anyone at Rogers knows what they're doing. I am also beginning to
believe that my gateway is not designed to create a home network and is just
a modem with multiple connection ports.
Aside from returning the gateway to rogers for a regular single connection
modem and purchasing a router from say best buy, do you all have any ideas?
I am only looking to set-up a home network consisting of a laptop and a
desktop for file and prineter sharing.

To connect to the wireless network I have to enter the password created at
set-up, so I'm definitely not connected to someone else's. As for changing
the name, I was asked during set-up of the router to provide a name for the
wireless network, so I'm not sure what the default would be.

I have
1.a wireless laptop running Vista Ultimate.
I have double and triple checked all the Vista settings for network
discovery, file and printer sharing, they are set correctly on both
devices.
If I connect the laptop to my desktop through a crossover cable, I do have
a
network available on which I can share all files and printers without any
problem.
I have contacted my ISP (Rogers) numerous times and they told me I had to
contact the manufacturer(SMC) as they only provide support for
connectivity.
I contacted SMC and they told me that Rogers had to provide support as
Rogers
has all the administrator rights to my gateway. I contacted Rogers and
they
told me that I had to "use a PRIVATE IP address and not a PUBLIC IP
address".
Umm, isn't the 192. series the private IP's? Needless to say I don't
believe anyone at Rogers knows what they're doing. I am also beginning to
believe that my gateway is not designed to create a home network and is
just
a modem with multiple connection ports.
Aside from returning the gateway to rogers for a regular single connection
modem and purchasing a router from say best buy, do you all have any
ideas?
I am only looking to set-up a home network consisting of a laptop and a
desktop for file and prineter sharing.

They use different IP ranges. Do you have two routers?

Okay, so I'm laughing at my own mistake.

I now have my network working perfectly. (if only Rogers had even bothered
to think or suggest this was the problem.)

My desktop was plugged into my Voip modem, and my Voip modem was plugged
into my router. Solved my problem by plugging the Voip modem into ethernet
spot 1 and the desktop into spot 2.

Voila, I have a network. Special thanks to Barb and Robert. It was your
questions that made me even think to trace the ethernet cables!

WilliamW said:
To connect to the wireless network I have to enter the password created at
set-up, so I'm definitely not connected to someone else's. As for changing
the name, I was asked during set-up of the router to provide a name for the
wireless network, so I'm not sure what the default would be.

ICS is not enabled. I can find no controls or options to verify the status
of multihoming.

If I connect the laptop to my desktop through a crossover cable, I do have

I have contacted my ISP (Rogers) numerous times and they told me I had to

Umm, isn't the 192. series the private IP's? Needless to say I don't
believe anyone at Rogers knows what they're doing. I am also beginning to
believe that my gateway is not designed to create a home network and is
just
a modem with multiple connection ports.
Aside from returning the gateway to rogers for a regular single connection
modem and purchasing a router from say best buy, do you all have any
ideas?
I am only looking to set-up a home network consisting of a laptop and a
desktop for file and prineter sharing.

sounds like you have two routers. what exact MODEM do you have?
sounds like it is also a router. or better, please provide details
on both the modem and the router. the SMC is the edge device that
connects to your ISP and it hands out private IP addresses. It
sounds like your VOIP modem is also a router.

It was your
questions that made me even think to trace the ethernet cables!

address".
Umm, isn't the 192. series the private IP's? Needless to say I don't
believe anyone at Rogers knows what they're doing. I am also beginning to
believe that my gateway is not designed to create a home network and is
just
a modem with multiple connection ports.
Aside from returning the gateway to rogers for a regular single connection
modem and purchasing a router from say best buy, do you all have any
ideas?
I am only looking to set-up a home network consisting of a laptop and a
desktop for file and prineter sharing.

without an actual model # for this VOIP gateway, I can only guess,
but it sure sounds like it supplies DHCP.

I have a VoIP gateway (says Analog Telephone Adapter 2 Port Ethernet LAN +
WAN and 2 port FXS on the top) provded by Linksys/Cisco Systems and an
internet gateway provided by SMC model SMC8014W-G.

Barb Bowman said:
sounds like you have two routers. what exact MODEM do you have?
sounds like it is also a router. or better, please provide details
on both the modem and the router. the SMC is the edge device that
connects to your ISP and it hands out private IP addresses. It
sounds like your VOIP modem is also a router.

:

To connect to the wireless network I have to enter the password created at
set-up, so I'm definitely not connected to someone else's. As for changing
the name, I was asked during set-up of the router to provide a name for the
wireless network, so I'm not sure what the default would be.

:

are you connecting to someone else's wireless network? did you
change the name of the wireless on YOUR router to something other
than the default?

I have
1.a wireless laptop running Vista Ultimate.
I have double and triple checked all the Vista settings for network
discovery, file and printer sharing, they are set correctly on both
