No Folder Icons

When I open Windows Explorer the folder tree on the left
side of the screen appeares, but only with folder names
and without folder icons such as My Documents picture.
 
This typically occurs when there is no c: drive, usually the result of
deleting of one of the operating systems in a multi-boot system. If this
describes your situation, there is a workaround:

Rather than using the subst command suggested in this article, I made
another drive I had on the system the c: drive in control
panel>administrative tools>computer management>disk management. Right-click
the drive for which you want to change the letter designation and click on
"change drive letters and paths". I would not change the drive XP boots on,
as it may have a negative impact on some installed programs. If you have no
other drives, use the fix provided in the link above.
