New motherboard/cpu, clean installed XP Home SP1.
Cannot start my XP firewall, due to status of my AOL connection in Network
Connections being "disconnected." Also, system reports firewall not enabled.
Is this a driver problem? I can connect to the internet with no problems.
Worse, downloaded the Sygate firewall, and all it did was cause drwtsn32.exe
to hog 98% of the cpu, so no firewall right now.

The SP1 firewall does not work with AOL and never did. The SP2 firewall
does work with AOL, I believe. Update your system to SP2 if you want to
use the Windows Firewall. There are other firewalls besides Sygate; try
them if you don't want to use the Windows firewall. ZoneAlarm and Kerio
are two others.

Thanks. Glad it is such a simple matter, as I will be changing to NetZero
soon. By any chance, would this explain why I cannot access Properties for
my dialup connection in Network Connections?

For the AOL connection? Yes. AOL is an unpleasant law unto itself.

Do yourself a favor and move to something other than AOL.

I agree with dumping AOL.
SP2 has been good to me with XP Pro.
Need another firewall besides XP and found "outcast". A free program and a
Pro version$. Contact <www.Agnitum.com>
