No file asssociations

Normally with a file extension e.g cda, mp3, jpg etc they are associated with a certain program and that program normally opens. However for my extensions they all have no associated program. I have tried to associate an extension with a program however my pc just locks up or the cpu usage is maxxed out at 100%.
