no disk space!! please help

Running Windows XP home edition 2002.

Don't have firewall or virus checking in place. Can't
install Microsoft's own windows security patch - fails
partway thru, thanx Microsoft!!

I suddenly find I have ALMOST NO DISK SPACE on a 55 GB
drive...looking at the folders in C: drive (even viewing
hidden folders) there looks to be no more than 15 GB of
genuine stuff.

Disk cleanup only frees up a few MB and disk check
doesn't report any errors.

Only clue I have is that if I do the 'analyze' step of
disk defragment, the list of fragmented disks shows a lot
of large files with 'RECYCLER' in the path name.
Searching on 'recycler' doesn't find anything.

Any clues anybody? many thanks if you can help.

SequoiaView is an excellent free (small and clean) utility to track down
mysterious missing drive space.

It provides a one window graphical representation of which files are taking
up how much space where on a drive, often tracking down files that Windows
is reluctant to reveal.

Open the folder containing the root of your drive (normally C:), at the top in the pull down menu dialog, select tools-folder options, click view tab, fill the radio box with show hidden files and folders, two boxes down there should be a tickbox saying ; 'hide protected operating system files' untick box, it will query you so confirm it, then click apply, you should now see on your root drive the recycler folder

Don't forget to put it back the way it was after you deal with it!

So you don't use any anti-virus solution and you don't use a firewall but you still blame microsoft !!!!! if you left your keys in your car and it was stolen would you blame your car manufacturer
you probably have a virus that is filling up your hdd YOU need to use anti-virus software there are some free ones available
