no desktop icons

I am using windows xp pro...and when i reboot....the only thing i see is my
desktop picture....NO icons or start or shutdown buttons!!!! I have tried to
run chkdsk /r repair from my windows xp disc..but no help??? any
suggestions?

Try to restart ur computer in safe-mode

i have tried to do safe mode...same thing just no picture and no icons or
tool bar in safe mode...just the words safe mode are at the bottom!

right click on your desktop, click arrange icons by, click show desktop
icons.
