No desktop, after reinstall of win XP, no monitor!

I am now using a friends computer, I had the problem of no icons, taskbar and unusable desktop after getting the gagse attack. A user here (sorry forget name) advised the symantec site for cleaning and a reinstall of windows. I followed the directions on each, at first the reinstall did great. I had windows back, desktop back, but my screen resolution etc was way off. ok monitor etc was not installed now, no surprise. I put in the monitor disc which said it had documentation and drivers for the Dell E773c color monitor. All i could see on the disc was the documentation. So I did what I have done in the past with win 98, tried to use the plug in play to install the monitor. I shut down, booted up and saw the normal boot up screen, with option for f2-setup and f12-boot in top right as usual. only after the normal boot up screen the screen goes blank. The pc seems to be working but nothing on monitor. so went from no desktop to no computer!
Any help with this would be great!
thanks

There was no need to reinstall Windows. Even though there are workarounds
for the no Desktop icons and Taskbar, most issues are related to the display
driver.

For your current issue, boot into Safe Mode. Then go to
Start/Run/Msconfig/Boot.ini and select /BaseVideo, reboot. From there,
reinstall your proper and undated drivers for XP and your monitor. Also,
check your settings under Display/Settings/Advanced.

Ok, just so you know, I am totaly illiterate when it comes to computers
How do I boot up in safe mode if I can not see anything?
once it goes by the Dell start up screen with the f2 and f12 options in top right, there is nothing

<LOL> Good point, Lea and thanks for the smile. However, in most cases
Safe Mode will work.

You need to hit F8 during boot, just after the BIOS info switches to black
screen.

How far do you live? Can I bring along my family of nine?

Just kidding....cleaning a virus is do-able and shouldn't ever need a
reinstall. Good luck, Lea.

Most welcome and good luck!

update
After trying a new monitor to see what happens..
If I do nothing and let windows boot up on its own I get a msg about missing or corrupt file: \windows\system32\config\syste
it then tells me to start windows from the original installation CD and select R for repair

each time I try to boot up from CD, I hit f12 to go to boot options to try and select boot from CD, it flashes on the boot screen then goes to the above msg. I try the f8 to go to safe mode and try from there. same thing, flashes the safemode select screen then goes to the above msg. I am now posting here in hopes of someone knowing how to fix this, and emailing back and forth with Dell to see if they can figure it out
i am afraid my new system is FUBAR! I am leaving it with this pc (thank you for letting me borrow it dear friend) and hooking it up to this monitor to try and get it to work
thanks for the help

Hi Lea,

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where
Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit
