no desk top icons

Hey all,

I just reloaded a program onto my computer (running
xp). I rebooted my system but I no longer have anything
on my desk top except for my wallpaper. I can access most
of my programs through Windows Task Manager (ctrl-alt-
delete) but that is the only way. Even pressing the start
icon on my keyboard does nothing. When I shut down my
computer the icons appear very breifly and then disappear
but do not come back when system is re-started.
anyone have any suggestions?
