No default page and no Navigation buttons after publishing

G

Guest

Hi.

Here is a weird one. Everything is perfectly fine and works well in FP
before I publish. The hyperlinks, buttons, everything. But after
publishing, only the index file comes up and the navigation buttons do not
even appear! It is like if the shared borders had disappeared! As I said,
everything is fine before uploading!

Any clues on how to fix this?

Hi Thomas.

No problem there. Everything is the same. In FrontPage 2002, everything
works well. It is just when everything is published to the site. All my
subdomains work but the photo gallery.

Can you provide the URL to problem?

Hi Thomas.

My website is www.artnettwork.com. I have 1 fully operational subdomain if
you want to see what it is supposed to look like www.degussa.artnettwork.com.

I must mention, before you do, that I initially lost the template I use on
my website when my boss wanted a default page. I taught I could use a blank
page, instead of creating one in the navigation window, and it it would be
ok. But when I deleted the shared borders, it deleted them everywhere! Bad
surprise. When you recommended to create subwebs on a previous problem, it
solved the problem in my subdomains but not on my main site. I had to do it
"by hand". Therefore, the buttons aren't the same color but are fully
operational.

I also have no clue as to why my default.htm page on my subdomains do not
work as well as on my main site. It is like it didn't see them and I know I
spelled it correctly.

Thanks

Open you online site in FP (File Open site http://www.artnettwork.com/) and reapply the shared borders

A better way to use a splash into page (if you must) is to create your whole site as a subweb and leave just the splash page in the
root web

PS
The space bar is not a design tool
- use tables for your page layout

Hi Stefan,

I am rather a novice in using FrontPage. In Germany, I can't stay online
too long as flat retaes do not exactly work the way it does back in North
America. Could you explain what you mean by using tables for my page
layouts? Do you mean using a table with columns and rows that you use for
data in Word? If so, why? What are the advantages? How would I use them?

Also, what is a "splash" page? Is it like a portal before coming into the
site, like if you want to select between 2 or 3 languages?

1) You won't need to stay online too long for the shared border changes
(when done publish changes only to you local version so it doesn't overwrite them on next publish)
2) Html table are not the same as Word processing tables
See the 2 tutorials at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/CR061832701033.aspx
3) A splash page is what you now have at your default home page
(an empty starting page w/ a click here to enter - considered by many as a waste of time)

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the links concerning the tutorials. This will be extremely
helpful. I have a video training cd about FP but it just shows you the
basics. Not really in depth. I appreciate it a lot Stefan! Thanks!

Hi Thomas,

I am sorry for the delay in answering. Regarding the URL you asked for, I
presume you mean the web site itself so that you can take a look. It is
www.artnettwork.com. I am told that the navigation buttons do not display
because the path is wrong! How can the path be wrong? I chose to use FP
because of its apparent ease of use. I am finding out that it is nothing
but. I even have to do some coding for which I know nothing about!

In any case, the path to my root folder is
c:\hosting\webhost4life\member\artnettwork. My subdomains work perfectly and
the path is correct. But I have no clue what to look for, where to look and
what to do after I find it! Would you be so kind to give me a serious hand
here please? I would really appreciate it as I am way over my head here!

Thank you for your help, patience and understanding.

Subdomains? Picture Gallery? I could not find any of these using the links
visible in themain pages.
The link www.artnettwork.com gives a 403 error - the name of the home page,
index.htm, needs to be changed to whatever your host requires for your web
site, probably default.htm since webhosts4life us Win2003 servers. (Oddly,
my site hosted there uses index.html as home page without problems.)

All the images associated with links display correctly.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for trying to help. I am really puzzled about this problem and just
can't find the solution. Everything I try seems to make matters worse. I am
getting that same error message as well. I am in the root folder now taking
a look at the coding and trying to find a discrepency with my subdomain
www.degussa.artnettwork.com that works like a charm. All my subdomains are
ok, except the pictures. What do you recommend Ron? I was told by
webhosts4life tech support that it is a path problem. I have no clue what to
look for, where to look and what to do once I do! Could you please give me a
hand? I would really appreciate it.

By the way, I also posted a "server error message:folder does not exist on
the server" in FP when I try to insert a picture or photo gallery (which I
was recommended not to use anymore).

Hi Thomas,

Concerning the problem with my navigation buttons, if I applied the shared
borders and the theme again, would that restore the paths and the
functionality? I checked the coding in FP and in the index file. I found no
mention of the names used that identify the buttons for the appropriate web
pages.

If you have at least the $9.95 / month package you can change the default
page from the control panel.

www.degussa.arnettwork.com opens with default.html as the home page.
Pressing the enter link takes us to www.degussa.artnettwork.com/index.htm,
which is the same page as www.artnettwork.com/index.htm
This suggests that the subdomain www.degussa is pointing at the root folder
for www.artnettwork.com .
From your control panel you can see the paths for all your domains and
subdomains in the package.

How/Where are you publishing your pages and files?

If publishing to a subdomain, you should publish to the subweb that contains
the subdomain.
Example:
Consider the subdomain test.example.com
This would be set up as a subweb at example.com/test
The content of test.example.com will be published to example.com/test
Note that links back from the subdomain to the main domain, and to any other
subdomain, will have to be absolute links, FrontPage will not manage
absolute links, and if you are designing in a disc-based web you may get
broken links and placeholders for images as a result, untill the web is
published.

Hi Ron,

I am stricly using FP to upload. Publishing that is. All my subdomains
have been created via subwebs.

I tried reapplying the themes and bars. Oddly enough, I see them in the
normal page, tried them all and all worked well. But they are nowhere to be
mentioned in the html coding! Honestly, I don't know what to think anymore!
Help!
