I have been using w2k as an administrator with no problems at all. I have
recently set up a "user" account and on start up an error dialog appears
that says; "There is no Controller detected".

There is no indication as to where this dialog originates and, in fact,
performance does not appear compromised. However I need to stop this error
message appearing. I have looked at the support sites for the hardware I
have installed and they do not recognise this message.

Does anyone have an idea how I may be able to track down this error?

TIA,
Dick Marjanovic

Do you have a CD burner installed? If so, do you have Roxio's FileCD (or
something similar) installed, which lets you drag and copy data to the CD
burner as you could to a floppy disc? FileCD, which automatically launches
with Windows, searches for a writable cd unit, and fails because you do not
have access to the burner as a standard user.

As a standard user, you do not have permission to write to a removable disc
(a Windows setting..) If you have XP Pro, you might be able to find an
override in Group Policy to allow any user to write to a cd-burner.

The answers are; yes and yes.
Have you any idea if I would have the same problem with Nero?
I shall follow this up.
Thanks for the clues!
Dick

I'm sure you will. It's a windows right issue, not a cd-burning software
issue (I think!). If you have a copy of nero, go ahead and try, but I
wouldn't run out and purchase a copy.

I would disable/uninstall the FileCD feature (unless you use it). You could
then either switch user to administrator (if you have it enabled) when you
need to use the burner, or see if a Run As.. will work one Roxio.
(Shift+Right click on the Roxio icon, select Run As; enter Admin
username/password)

I have not found a group policy solution yet, so I log in as admin when I
need to burn a cd. Luckily for me, I don't need to access it to often.

Does anyone else out there know if there is a group policy setting that will
allow standard users to access the writable features of a cd-burner?

I have uninstalled Roxio (and removed all traces from the registry) but the
error still occurs suggesting perhaps it's not related to the CDRW. Your
information has been extremely useful though and very relevant.
There is also an Adaptec 1200A raid controller on the system, so I'm
persuing that aspect at the moment.

Dick

Dick, the first step is to go through all your startup locations
(via Regedit) to see what specifically is causing the error. The
full list is here, but pay special attention to the first eight entries:
http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=autostarts

Once you find the program, driver, service etc. that's causing
the error, it'll point you toward the solution.

Useful advice too.
I think I've narrowed the problem down to the Adaptec RAID Management
software. Not quite sure what to do about it, but I'll work something out.
Thanks for all help,
Dick
