no connectivity

Hello all, I just did a clean install on my other laptop of xp pro
2002. It went off without a hitch, except I have no connectivity to
the internet. I'm using a cable modem that works fine on any of my
machines, even the problem machine. The only thing listed under
"Network Connections > LAN or High-Speed Internet" is a 1394
connection that is enabled, and when I check the status, it says
"connected" but there is 0 send and recieve data. When I click
"repair", it says " failed to query TCP/IP settings." When I try to
establish a new connection with the wizard, it says that my broadband
connection should already be configured and ready to use. A possible
related problem is that in my device manager, everything listed under
"other devices" i.e. ethernet controller, network controller, etc, has
no drivers. My system is a viao FS742/w and had connectivity before
the clean install. The old OS was xp home. Any ideas?

Whenever you do a clean install of an operating system, you must install
the drivers for all your hardware afterwards. This is why you have no
Internet connectivity.

If you don't have a cd with all the drivers that came with your laptop,
then go to Sony's site for your specific model Vaio and download all the
drivers and laptop-specific software. Burn to cd-r.

Try this:
= Click Start >> Control panel >> Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Network connections, then right your LAN Icon and select Properties.
On the LAN properties under General make sure the Internet Protocol TCP/IP
is selected and click Properties.
There make sure the Machine Get assigned Automatically IP address then click
[OK].

= Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced.
Click on Connections tab and make sure the Connection is listed there then
click on LAN settings button and uncheck Automatically detect settings.
Click [OK] and close Hit F5 and open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot your machine.
HTH.
