No Browsing after Standby

I have looked at the knowledge base, but can't find a solution to my
problem. "Sometimes" after coming off of Standby mode, none of my browsers
will work. They open okay, but there is no connection to the internet (via
cable modem). I say sometimes, because if I go on standby for relatively
short periods, there does not seem to be a problem. Usually when I have
been on standby for maybe an hour or longer, do I experience the problem of
not being able to use the browsers. To fix the problem, I must restart the
computer.

I am current on ALL Windows XP upgrades.

Can anyone help to diagnosis what may be causing this?

Thanks,
Bernie

Likely the network card lost the connection. You can try setting the
Power management on it in Device Manager.

Open your Device Manager, scroll down to the Network Adapter,
right-click on the Network Adapter, select Properties > Power Management.
Then uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
and click OK.

Whoops!
I replied to the writer, rather than to the group. Sorry about that. For
the group, my messages read as follows:

This seems quite reasonable Carey. I appreciate your response, and
suggestion. I can't test this until later this evening, but for others who
may be interested in this problem, I'll post the results after testing.

Thanks for your help.

The solution to my problem, as provided by Carey Frisch, seems to have
solved the problem. I have gone into Standby mode twice now, and it comes
out very quickly, with the browser working just fine.

Again, thanks for your help.

This sounds like my problem exactly - I leave the computer for an hour or so
and come back and my network connection has disconnected. I would love to
try the solution that Carey supplied, but I need to know how to access the
"Device Manager". I have already adjusted all the power settings so they are
identical (through 'properties' on the desktop). Is that the Device Manager
you are referring to?

Thanks for any help...

Hi Zombiemaster

To access Device Manager:

Right-click My Computer and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
Click on the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Nightowl...I found the option and have turned it off. Fingers
crossed...thanks everybody for the help!

Well, that didn't work! I have the settings set as instructed, but I am
still having the same problem. I even checked all the users to make sure it
was a generic setting on all of them, but I still have to do a reboot in
order to reset my connection after the computer is idle for a while. At this
point I don't even have a screen saver running, but no good. Any other
ideas? Thanks!
