installed windows 2000 over 98 me i have a HP is it

What model HP? When I upgraded from 98 to W2K my sound
card wasn't compatible and had to be replaced.

If you didn't install any Windows 2000 drivers for your soundcard then
you won't have any audio. Visit web site of sound card manufacturer,
download correct drivers and install them.
