No audio mixer installed

Reinstalled XP pro after some kind of HDD fault.
Now the sound won't work - no volume control and a report of no audio mixer
installed.
The codecs are there, but I can't find any way to get the volume control back.
Any ideas?

Did you get any utility disks with the PC when you purchased it?
Check them for soundcard drivers.

Sound drivers could be on that disk. View the contents.
