No Audio Device Reconized

when I open sounds and audio devices from cotrol panel, I get a message at
the top (under volume) that says No Audio Device. I have had this problem on
and off since I bought this computer. Use to be that if I shut the machine
off and then turned it back on, sometimes the sound would be restored. More
recently the sound does not return after shutdown. In the volume section, as
well as the audio and voice sections, everthing is dim and cannot be accessed
with mouse.

Update the sound device driver.
