No audio device/headphones/speakers/system sounds after upgrade to

This question may seem redundant, but after reading almost all posts about
"audio and sound" system problems, still no success.
After a recent upgrade to XP from 2000 Pro, and after running device manager
and hardware many times, I found that I still have no sound and audio device
found. Tried every imaginable solution including: reboot, re-re-install in
"console" repair, unplugged and re-plugged system (analog) speakers/headset,
with computer off and on, speech option and printers/faxes in control panel,
DirectX diagnostic, and including adding in Intel (possible) drivers.
Followed other recommendations and went to other XP links-recommended in
prior posts and stiil no solution.
Hopefully, the information I'm about to post is not too much, but I'd
thought that I'd include all possible information for future generations to
review. Here's what I have.

I've used this motherboard at my last work place, so I looked at my old
files and it appears to use a variant of a SoundMax audio chip.
Try downloading Everest Ultimate edition from www.lavalys.com and click
on Physical Devices tab. Copy down the ADXXXX number for the SoundMax
card it gives you and then do a Google search for that part number.

Thanks Adam,
Well I followed your instructions and this is what shows under physical tab:

Nothing seemed to show for Soundmax, but I do know that somewhere with in
the 2000 pro I had it (I tried to have it work from archived files-and then
deleted when it did not work for XP)
Under "multimedia/Windows" tab thought it shows:

Device Identifier Device Description
wave-in.0 0001 0050 Modem #0 Line Record
wave-out.0 0001 0051 Modem #0 Line Playback

And for Multimedia/ PCI-PnP Audio:
Device Description Type
Analog Devices AD1981B(L) @ Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller
[B-0] PCI
But I don't believe I've ever used this.

Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Once again-thanks Adam:
I went to 1st site recommended, but since it had 5-6 possible versions of
researched other options and found this at:
http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/192/192040.htm
and followed instructions for Drivers.com(soundmax_ad1981b.exe)Packer Bell.
Don't know if it really worked since at the same time(right after) I did a
search on computer for "Soundmax" and re-installed older version(anything
that said XP) and after several attempts, re-booted and got to work,
including Directx and headset.
Would not have been able to do with out your guidance-thanks a million
gigabytes.
Taught me how to fish-even though you threw me fishies.
Your second link didn't work for me since it kept saying: driver not found
at end of install.
Regardless-after about a month of no sound-success!
Thru further browsing also found this site that may help others:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
(Carefull on this one since for those that may experimentt would at the end
of install it gave me a warning on a different (safe) page in blue page and
would de-install.)
Once again-thanks Adam!
