No Association for File Extension

Jason

Hi, I posted this question on another newsgroup by
mistake: I am missing some winxp win files, when I try to
repair xp with my cd I get a "box" titled "No Association
for File Extension".
then in the box it says E:Setup\Setup.exe" under that it
says "Make sure proper software is installed."I have gone
to numerous sites thru google and none of them address
the specific answer to the software I need, they only
tell me how to associate one file to another if "I know
what the file is", the message does not tell me, I think,
what the software is: As I said it says "Make sure
proper software is installed." I would deeply appreciate
some help. P.S. I did find one site but it was "way over
my head" to figure out what to do. Thanks, again for
any help. If you need my email or phone just let me know,
thanks again.

Type in Start Run

command /c copy %windir%\regedit.exe %windir%\regedit.com
%windir%\system32\regedit.com

Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
and make sure the default value is
"%1" %*

Jeez I do not know what I'm doing wrong, but it does not
work. Should I go to start run and then type in /c copy %
windir%\regedit.exe %windir%\regedit.com
%windir%\system32\regedit.com ? If so it did not work,
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, Please help me,
Thanks a lot

Type "command /c copy %windir%\regedit.exe %windir%\regedit.com" exactly in the RUN box. Remove the quotes.

Hi Jason,

1. Browse to the appropriate Setup.exe or Install.exe program
2. Right click on the setup program and select "Run As..."
3. Uncheck the box that says protect my computer and data from unauthorized
program activity.

Note: Doing this alters the default protection only for this
operation/setup program... it does NOT disable it permanently.

Go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/xp_fixes.html
and seventh from bottom on left get 'File Association fixes'.

That should cure the immediate problem which probably arose from
removing a virus that hijacked the associations. But then make sure
that your anti virus program's definitions are up to date (meaning
TODAY) and run a full anti virus check
