No Aero

I just installed a new GeForce 7600GS 512mb DDR2 AGP. I upgraded so I could
utilize aero. I went to nvidia's site and downloaded the beta drivers for
vista, followed the instructions in windows help to activate aero, and I
have no option of activating aero. all I have for themes is "windows vista
basic" how do I make it work?

My specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+

1gb PC3200 DDR (2 x 512mb)

250gb Seagate Barracuda ATA HD

Biostar NF325A7 motherboard w/NForce3 chipset, on-board LAN, AC'97 5.1 audio

GeForce 7600GS 512mb DDR2 AGP (overclocked)

The more I read about it, the more I think one
shouldn't use the driver supplied by Nvidia. My
desktop machine has a "lowend" Nvidia card
that had AeroGlass out of the box with pre-RC1,
RC1 and now Rc2. No problem and Glass enabled
by default.

Hmm... check device manager... is there a "WDDM" at the end of your display
adapter entry in DM?

If not, you're out of luck for the moment... until a newer driver is
released.

If your driver does indicate WDDM, you could try this reg hack which I've
copied and pasted from another person's post:

1/ Ensure that you have the following registry value set to :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPolicy set to 2 (32-bit
DWORD)

2/ Restart DWM by opening a command prompt with administrative privileges :

- Type 'net stop uxsms'
- Then 'net start uxsms'

*************************************************************

That hack worked here on a Dell Latitude D620 with 512MB RAM and 64MB vid
RAM.

Good luck.

I had to roll back from the Nvidia 64 bit Vista driver to get Aero to work.
I also made the registry edits recommended. Aero works fine now.

I looked it and there was WDDM. After hacking it works. Thank you very much
for the assistance. How did yo know this trick?
What do you think, why didn't worked by default?

Thanks Lang. I had previously, under both Beta and RC 1, using an ATI
Radeon 9550, and the drivers shipped with Vista, had no problems with
the Aero and Glass appearance.

Right prior to upgrading to RC 2, I'd got hoggish and installed in
addition to the 9550, a pci ATI 9250, attached two more monitors and
went quad head on the machine. To get it to do so I had to un-install
the Vista supplied drivers and go with ATI's Catalyst release for Vista
for both cards. It turned out great with the exception of having the
problem previously mentioned in the thread as to the loss of the Aero
options. Editing the registry had not worked for me. Reading your post I
now see the probable reason it isn't working for me. I ain't got no WDDM
showing up on end my Display Adapter in DM. ;-(

I need to do some more fiddling I see. Other than that Vista is working
pretty good for an old barefoot country boy frum Tejas. Seeeeee! ;-)

I read about the hack in this NG... it was posted just a couple/few days
ago... glad to help spread the word though. Not sure why it didn't work out
of the box... you meet the 1GB RAM and 128MB vid RAM minimum for Aero. I
installed 5744 on 4 PC's here. 3 of them meet the minimum reqs and got Aero
as expected. One of the PC's does not meet the minimum, but still supports
Aero if you force it. In earlier builds, this could be accomplished via the
UI. Not in 5744... the hack is required. Dunno... mayhaps a bug, I'd guess.
