NK2 - Autocomplete works after sending calendar events but not e-m

G

I recently had a computer replaced and noticed the autocomplete feature was
not working for me. Another user, whom also had their PC swapped out, also
mentioned this issue to me.

After looking up information about the NK2 file, what I discovered was that
the NK2 file was being created, but it was always staying empty, nothing was
being entered into the file (file was 0k and blank when opened through word
pad).

I tried deleting the NK2 file and starting over, creating a new mail
profile, and renaming and using the NK2 file from my old machine, but
nothing would cause anything new to be written to the Nk2 file (the old NK2
file worked, but no new addresses were being added to the file).

Then, randomly, I noticed a name was autocompleting. I opened the NK2 file
and saw that 2 addresses were in suddenly in the file. I looked at recently
sent items for an e-mail that contained these two names, and discoversed I
never sent them any e-mails that day, but I did invite the 2 people to a
calendar event. I tested a calendar event with another e-mail address and
the NK2 file succesfully updated with this new receipient.

So here's the issue: The NK2 file will update with an address used for a
calendar event, but it will not get updated if sending an e-mail message
(even if I leave Outlook open).

If this is actually a symptom for a lot of these issues on this message
board, then that would explain why people say the Autocomplete feature
sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The only names in the NK2 file would
be addreses that have been invited to a calendar event.

I really don't want to have to tell a customer that they have to send a test
(or offline) calendar event to all the people they want autocomplete to work
with, and selecting all the names from the GAL is not a possibility becuase
our user community is extremely large. There has to be a way for this to
work correclty.

Another user on the msg board has tested this partial functionality, and has
had the same results - Successful with calendar events, no good with e-mails.
Any ideas where to go from here?

Not a recognized symptom or behavior.
You "opened" the NK2 file? Really? How?
Anti-virus email scanning might prevent addresses from being written to the
NK2 file.

Since someone else on this board has already had success in getting the auto
complete feature to work by sending calendar events to someone, I hope that
others having similar issues also have the same results - to me that feels
like we are one step closer to figuring out the resolution.

I checked my av software, and unfortunately I'm not setup for e-mail
scanning. From a security standpoint, I'd be awfully concerned if
Appointment invites were not treated the same way as e-mail messages, since
you can attach files to them just the same. Besides, I'm not an expert, but
wouldn't the e-mail scan functionality occur on incoming mail as opposed to
outgoing mail.

I opened the NK2 file in Wordpad. There's a lot of unreadable "garbage" in
the file, but I can still see the names and addresses in there (or tell when
it is blank).

To date there are three known causes for autocompletion's failing:
1. Upgrading from Outlook 2000 without creating a new profile
2. AV software setting the NK2 file to read only.
3. A corrupt profile.
No other causes have been documented well enough that they can be
reproduced. Hopefully someone will do so. The NK2 file can only be opened
for viewing and editing with third party software.

So with situations 1 and 3, the resolve is to create a new profile, which has
not worked for me.

And situation 2 is not the case, otherwise there would be no way to get any
addresses into the NK2 file, which I can do by inviting someone to a calendar
appointment.

As far as viewing the contents of the NK2 file, anyone familiar enough with
file associations, file extensions, open with, etc. can open the NK2 file in
wordpad or notepad to get an idea of what is in there, especially when it's
the difference between nothing in the file and valid data. Change the
extenstion of your NK2 file to TXT if you don't believe me.

I guess I'm stuck with sending calendar appointments to people in order to
get addresses into the NK2 file. Could you please at least recommend this
test to users who are having problems that don't fit the 3 situations you
mentioned? Maybe we'll be able to zero in on the cause. Unfortunately the
client I work for has too many cooks in the kitchen to be able to find the
exact source of conflict

I realize you can view the NK2 file in Notepad or WordPad. What you can't
do, however, is tell enough about what is going on to be of any help. The
only program that would help you learn more about what is actually going on
in the NK2 file is Ingressor, and I'm sure its developers would be very
interested in your report since it is not a known or reproducible issue as
of yet. There are always new wrinkles appearing with autocompletion.

Well, if a name doesn't get into the NK2 file by sending e-mail, there's not
going to be any valid information in the file that would help me figure out
why its not there in the first place, so I don't really care if I can view

All I need to do is resolve the names and addresses by running check names in

All this is doing is manually resolving a name. What happens if you manually
resolve a name for an email recipient? Will that jumpstart autocompletion
too?
Still looking for the steps to repro this problem. Since I've never seen it,
I can't test it.
I'd still consider giving at least the trial version of Ingressor a try so
you can see more clearly what's going on. Its developers may be able to
troubleshoot this.

the NK2 file was being created, but it was always staying empty,
nothing
was
being entered into the file (file was 0k and blank when opened
through
word
pad).

I tried deleting the NK2 file and starting over, creating a new
mail
profile, and renaming and using the NK2 file from my old machine,
but
nothing would cause anything new to be written to the Nk2 file
(the
old
NK2
file worked, but no new addresses were being added to the file).

Then, randomly, I noticed a name was autocompleting. I opened
the
NK2
file
and saw that 2 addresses were in suddenly in the file. I looked
at
recently
sent items for an e-mail that contained these two names, and
discoversed I
never sent them any e-mails that day, but I did invite the 2
people
to
a
calendar event. I tested a calendar event with another e-mail
address
and
the NK2 file succesfully updated with this new receipient.

So here's the issue: The NK2 file will update with an address
used
for
a
calendar event, but it will not get updated if sending an e-mail
message
(even if I leave Outlook open).

If this is actually a symptom for a lot of these issues on this
message
board, then that would explain why people say the Autocomplete
feature
sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The only names in the NK2
file
would
be addreses that have been invited to a calendar event.

I really don't want to have to tell a customer that they have to
send a
test
(or offline) calendar event to all the people they want
autocomplete
to
work
with, and selecting all the names from the GAL is not a
possibility
becuase
our user community is extremely large. There has to be a way for
this
to
work correclty.

Another user on the msg board has tested this partial
functionality,
and
has
had the same results - Successful with calendar events, no good
with
e-mails.
Any ideas where to go from here?

I just assumed that it would be understood that since I'm having problems
getting Autocompletion to work with e-mails, then the resolve process, which
would be required about 80% of the time to send a message if using a GAL,
would not be causing it to work.

Summary of symptom/findings:

Autocompletion works to an extent, but only for addresses/names that have
been resolved in a calendar appointment.

Data will only be added to the NK2 file will only add data (and cause the
name to work with autocomplete) if the name/address is resolved in a calendar
appointment. Resolving a name in e-mail/sending an e-mail does not cause the
entry to be added into the NK2 file.

Autoresolve/manual resolve is working for both e-mails and calendar
appoinments.

The NK2 file will be created if it does not exist in the appropriate windows
folder once outlook is closed (but it will be 0 kb and contain no data unless
names/addresses have resolved in a calendar appointment).

Autocompletion on existing computers on the network (also using Outlook
2003) does not have the problem, but newer computers on the system do. We
are both using the same build (11.8010.8036), our network policies are the
same, and other than slight hardware differences, I believe we are setup
correclty.

Deleting, recreating, renaming the NK2 file does not resolve the issue.

Creating a new mail profile does not resolve the issue.

Using my NK2 file from my other computer does not resolve the issue.
Autocompletion will work for any names already in that old nk2 file but new
names/address will not be added (unless via a calendar appointment)

So with situations 1 and 3, the resolve is to create a new profile,
which
has
not worked for me.

And situation 2 is not the case, otherwise there would be no way to get
any
addresses into the NK2 file, which I can do by inviting someone to a
calendar
appointment.

As far as viewing the contents of the NK2 file, anyone familiar enough
with
file associations, file extensions, open with, etc. can open the NK2
file
in
wordpad or notepad to get an idea of what is in there, especially when
it's
the difference between nothing in the file and valid data. Change the
extenstion of your NK2 file to TXT if you don't believe me.

I guess I'm stuck with sending calendar appointments to people in order

you
mentioned? Maybe we'll be able to zero in on the cause. Unfortunately
the
client I work for has too many cooks in the kitchen to be able to find

:

To date there are three known causes for autocompletion's failing:
1. Upgrading from Outlook 2000 without creating a new profile
2. AV software setting the NK2 file to read only.
3. A corrupt profile.
No other causes have been documented well enough that they can be
reproduced. Hopefully someone will do so. The NK2 file can only be
opened
for viewing and editing with third party software.

the
auto
complete feature to work by sending calendar events to someone, I
hope
that
others having similar issues also have the same results - to me that
feels

I checked my av software, and unfortunately I'm not setup for e-mail

Appointment invites were not treated the same way as e-mail
messages,
since
you can attach files to them just the same. Besides, I'm not an

outgoing mail.

Ok, one more finding, not sure if it is relevant or not.

My profile name is "last name, first name" So, let's say my profile is
"Last, First". The NK2 file that Outlook is creating and using is "Last
First.nk2" (there's 2 spaces instead of comma space).

Ingressor was trying to open 'Last, First.nk2' and wasn't finding it. So I
renamed the Nk2 file to match my mail profile name. Then it would open in
Ingressor (which unfortunately didn't tell me much in terms of why with
appointments it gets entered, but with mail it does not). Except now that my
NK2 file had been renamed, it of course wouldn't work in Outlook. When I
closed outlook again it created 'Last First.nk2'

So great right? Another step towards resolution, right? Nope. My
coworker's profile is setup in the exact same convention (Last, First), and
his NK2 file, which is working fine, also has 2 spaces rather than comma
space (Last First.nk2). Also, creating a new mail profile using a one word
convention did not resolve the problem when I tried.

So just another wierd little issue that I found intriguing.

May I recommend one more time creating a new mail profile, but choose a name

FInally, rename the existing NK2 file to match your new profile and start

Same Results,

Made a new profile, renamed the NK2 file to match my new profile, new
names/addresses were not being added unless they were manually resolved in an
appointment. (I did also find out that they don't get entered into the NK2
file if they auto resolve in the appointment, I either have to send the
appointment or run check names).

be addreses that have been invited to a calendar event.

I really don't want to have to tell a customer that they have
to
send a
test
(or offline) calendar event to all the people they want
autocomplete
to
work
with, and selecting all the names from the GAL is not a
possibility
becuase
our user community is extremely large. There has to be a way
for
this
to
work correclty.

Another user on the msg board has tested this partial
functionality,
and
has
had the same results - Successful with calendar events, no
good
with
e-mails.
Any ideas where to go from here?

I'm just saying that the name resolves in both e-mails and calendars (outlook
finds the name). But the name is only added to the NK2 file if this is done
in a calendar appointment. When a name/address is resolved in an e-mail
message, it is not added to the NK2 File.

I just assumed that it would be understood that since I'm having problems
getting Autocompletion to work with e-mails, then the resolve process,
which
would be required about 80% of the time to send a message if using a GAL,
would not be causing it to work.

Summary of symptom/findings:

Autocompletion works to an extent, but only for addresses/names that have
been resolved in a calendar appointment.

Data will only be added to the NK2 file will only add data (and cause the
name to work with autocomplete) if the name/address is resolved in a
calendar
appointment. Resolving a name in e-mail/sending an e-mail does not cause
the
entry to be added into the NK2 file.

Autoresolve/manual resolve is working for both e-mails and calendar
appoinments.

The NK2 file will be created if it does not exist in the appropriate
windows
folder once outlook is closed (but it will be 0 kb and contain no data
unless
names/addresses have resolved in a calendar appointment).

Autocompletion will work for any names already in that old nk2 file but
new
names/address will not be added (unless via a calendar appointment)

All this is doing is manually resolving a name. What happens if you

Still looking for the steps to repro this problem. Since I've never seen
it,
I can't test it.
I'd still consider giving at least the trial version of Ingressor a try
so
you can see more clearly what's going on. Its developers may be able to
troubleshoot this.

Well, if a name doesn't get into the NK2 file by sending e-mail,
there's
not
going to be any valid information in the file that would help me figure
out
why its not there in the first place, so I don't really care if I can
view
all the data, I just care that no data is getting in there.

On a side note, I did find out today that the calendar appointment does
not
even need to be sent in order for the names to get written to the NK2
file.
All I need to do is resolve the names and addresses by running check
names
in
the appointment, and then I can close it without sending it and the
names
will autocomplete. I assume this would be how it would work in an
e-mail
message, if it was working.

This workaround should be easy enough for users to work with. I'll be
back
on the msg board occasionally to see if anyone else is experiencing
similar
issues. Thanks for tall the information

I realize you can view the NK2 file in Notepad or WordPad. What you
can't
do, however, is tell enough about what is going on to be of any help.
The
only program that would help you learn more about what is actually
going
on
in the NK2 file is Ingressor, and I'm sure its developers would be
very
interested in your report since it is not a known or reproducible
issue
as
of yet. There are always new wrinkles appearing with autocompletion.

So with situations 1 and 3, the resolve is to create a new profile,
which
has
not worked for me.

And situation 2 is not the case, otherwise there would be no way to
get
any
addresses into the NK2 file, which I can do by inviting someone to a
calendar
appointment.

As far as viewing the contents of the NK2 file, anyone familiar
enough
with
file associations, file extensions, open with, etc. can open the NK2
file
in
wordpad or notepad to get an idea of what is in there, especially
when
it's
the difference between nothing in the file and valid data. Change
the
extenstion of your NK2 file to TXT if you don't believe me.

I guess I'm stuck with sending calendar appointments to people in
order
to
get addresses into the NK2 file. Could you please at least
recommend
this
test to users who are having problems that don't fit the 3
situations
you
mentioned? Maybe we'll be able to zero in on the cause.
Unfortunately
the
client I work for has too many cooks in the kitchen to be able to
find
the
exact source of conflict

Since someone else on this board has already had success in
getting
the
auto
complete feature to work by sending calendar events to someone, I
hope
that
others having similar issues also have the same results - to me
that
feels
like we are one step closer to figuring out the resolution.

I checked my av software, and unfortunately I'm not setup for
e-mail
scanning. From a security standpoint, I'd be awfully concerned
if
Appointment invites were not treated the same way as e-mail
messages,
since
you can attach files to them just the same. Besides, I'm not an
expert,
but
wouldn't the e-mail scan functionality occur on incoming mail as
opposed
to
outgoing mail.

I opened the NK2 file in Wordpad. There's a lot of unreadable
"garbage"
in
the file, but I can still see the names and addresses in there
(or
tell
when
it is blank).

Not a recognized symptom or behavior.
You "opened" the NK2 file? Really? How?
Anti-virus email scanning might prevent addresses from being
written
to
the
NK2 file.

I recently had a computer replaced and noticed the autocomplete
feature
was
not working for me. Another user, whom also had their PC
swapped
out,
also
mentioned this issue to me.

After looking up information about the NK2 file, what I
discovered
was
that
the NK2 file was being created, but it was always staying
empty,
nothing
was
being entered into the file (file was 0k and blank when opened
through
word
pad).

I tried deleting the NK2 file and starting over, creating a
new
mail
profile, and renaming and using the NK2 file from my old
machine,
but
nothing would cause anything new to be written to the Nk2 file
(the
old
NK2
file worked, but no new addresses were being added to the
file).

Then, randomly, I noticed a name was autocompleting. I opened
the
NK2
file
and saw that 2 addresses were in suddenly in the file. I
looked
at
recently
sent items for an e-mail that contained these two names, and
discoversed I
never sent them any e-mails that day, but I did invite the 2
people
to
a
calendar event. I tested a calendar event with another e-mail
address
and
the NK2 file succesfully updated with this new receipient.

So here's the issue: The NK2 file will update with an address
used
for
a
calendar event, but it will not get updated if sending an
e-mail
message
(even if I leave Outlook open).

If this is actually a symptom for a lot of these issues on
this

Truly a unique problem that needs to be reproduced. If you don't mind
parting with your NK2 file, I'd be happy to have the Ingressor developers
take a look at what's going on.
