There's also a difference in giving your opinion when ask and cramming it
down some innocent persons throat. If I ask "What's your opinion of abc
software" then feel free to tell me you hate it and wouldn't recommend it.
That's fair. But if I want to use abc software, am trying to resolve a
problem with it, and the only thing they can offer is that they hate it and
wouldn't recommend it, then I can't see that they're constructive at all.
And frankly I don't appreciate their input.
I liken it to a person who has sworn that they'd never drive another Ford
but enjoys going around to Chevy owers telling them they should get rid of
that piece of junk.
And, yes, I'm sure it shows that the abc software gestapo "ruffles my
feathers". The person that started this thread didn't ask for anyone's
opinion of NIS. They mistakening posted their legitimate question in the
wrong newsgroup.

While not a consensus, most responders who do Computer &
Technical work have probably been involved with a problematic
NIS or NAV situation. This separates us from the average user
because of the various setups/applications we encounter. If you
only use a single vendor product, you don't expose yourself to a
alternate which may be better/cheaper/leaner..... In my own case,
I'm not impressed by or interested in either Symantec or McAfee.
However, I do not "Knock" them without details of why or fail
to offer workable alternatives. Spend 3-4 hours trying to untangle
a failed Norton install/upgrade/subscription and do this 50+ times
and you'll soon detect a pattern and cause for re-thinking using or
recommending them in the future.
There's a distinct difference between a product "bashing" and trying
to inform less experienced users and help them, their PCs and in
some cases their wallet.
