I was using a formatted CD-R (the drag and drop program whose name I can't
recall now) that I had used a number of times before, deleting a folder that
I intended to replace from the HD.
Suddenly it froze solid. "Not Responding" was the message from Task Manager.
However, Task Manager could not "end task." And the CD drawer would not
open. I tried repeatedly to get Task Manager to end task, but the only thing
that happened was that all of my Desktop icons disappeared. Finally I had to
power off the computer.
With the computer off, the CD drawer will not open, so I rebooted. It took
longer than usual, as Windows was apparently trying to boot from the CD.
It eventually loaded and I was then able to open the CD drawer and remove
the disk.
Now I'm afraid to try to use that program any more.
I wonder if anyone has an idea why this happened and how to prevent it in
the future.
BTW, it occurs to me as I write that I had NOT unchecked "Enable Recording"
in the drive's properties. Despite that, the program had worked many times
before without any problems.
