Nickname cache doesn't work on .NK2 file

Hello,

I submitted a question in August regarding a .NK2 file issue. We have quite
a few users that have Outlook 2003 that cannot utilize the automatic name
checking feature. I have one user in particular that I have performed the
following on:

-Renamed .NK2 file so that a new one would be created. New one was created
but still does not cache previously used email addresses.

-Created new Outlook profile. .NK2 file still does not cache previously used
email addresses.

-Created new WS profile. .NK2 file still does not cache previously used
email addresses.

-I logged on to the client's computer (my roaming profile came down), I
accessed Outlook, sent 2 emails (.NK2 file did not come down with roaming
profile, a new .NK2 file was created after I exited Outlook), but it would
not would not cache the email address after I went back into Outlook.

Any suggestions?

That is what I was going to try next. Are you suggesting to reinstall
Office or use a particular tool to repair Office?

Sorry that was blank...I support a fairly large user community with Microsoft
Office, but have no control over any hardware, installs or software updates
or the exchange server.

I recently had a computer replaced and noticed the autocomplete feature was
not working for me. Another user, whom also had their PC swapped out, also
mentioned this issue to me. After looking up information about the NK2
file, what I discovered was that the NK2 file was being created, but it was
always staying empty, nothing was being entered into the file (file was 0k
and blank when opened in word pad).

I tried deleting the Nk2 file and starting over, creating a new mail
profile, using the NK2 file from my old machine, but nothing would cause
anything new to be written to the Nk2 file (the old NK2 file worked, but no
new addresses were being added).

Then I saw today that 2 addresses were auto completing. What I discoverred
is that the NK2 file created these entries not based on any e-mails I sent,
but to a new calendar event that I invited these 2 people to.

So here's the issue: The NK2 file will create an entry and autocomplete
functionality will work if I first invite people to a calendar event, but it
will not work if when sending an e-mail message.

With this partial functionality, now I'm really confused as to what could be
causing this issue. Any suggestions? This one's really eating away at me.

Hi Pudgilist,

Well I tested your theory, and sure enough, it worked. By sending an invite
to an email address, the address would cache. I have someone else looking at
this issue, because just as you've said, the .NK2 file is supposed to cache
an email address after sending an email to that individual. As I receive
more information, I will let you know what I find out.

Allie,

I figured out today, that you don't even need to send the appointment. As
long as you resolve the names in the TO: field (by running CHECK NAMES) the
addresses will get written to the NK2 file and be available for
AutoCompletion.

This makes the workaround a lot easier to sell to a user, because then you
don't need to worry about sending a fake appointment or having them disable
their network connection in order to dummy send it.

Still curious what the soruce of this issue is, but at this point, it's time
to move on to bigger and better things.

All this is doing is manually resolving a name. What happens if you manually
resolve a name for an email recipient? Will that jumpstart autocompletion
too?
Still looking for the steps to repro this problem. Since I've never seen it,
I can't test it.
