I've installed 5 or 6 different NIC's into an eMachine
(1.2 gig celeron with XP home ED.), and cannot pull IP
from Toshiba Cable modem. Here is were it gets
interesting. The Cable Modem was set up via USB. After
installing NIC and trying EVERYTHING I know, I unpluged
patch chord from the NIC, Reset the Cable modem, plugged
in the USB....no IP! Reboot...no IP. Did a system restore
to previous day...USB pulls valid IP. OK...shut down
PC..unplug USB....install NIC...reboot cable modem, boot
PC, plug in Cat5 patch from cable modem to NIC....no IP!
Shut down PC, unplug Cat5, plug in USB, reboot cable
modem, boot PC.....NO FREAKING IP!!! What is happening
when the NIC is installed that disables the USB, as well
as not being able to pull IP? Of course...did another
restore to previous day once again and...USB pulls valid
IP. This is CRAZY!!!!!!

Have you checked Device Manager to see if your NIC is setup correctly?
Have you checked to see if you need updated drivers for it? If so,
have you got the updated drivers? If so, have you installed said
drivers?

The possibilities for disaster are limitless.

Have you contacted your ISP??? Some (MOST) modems have
seperate (different) MAC addresses.
