NIC (network interface card)

David

I am setting up a network at an elementary school and I
have a couple of computers that when connected to the
network they show "status connected," but when I try to go
onto the internet, or to see other computers on the
network nothing shows. The computers are operating W2K
Pro, and have Intel Pro 10/100 NIC's. When I check the
status of the NIC it is continually sending information,
but is not recieveing any in return. I have also checked
the connection with another computer (same interface), and
when I plug the cat-5 into it's NIC the system connects to
the LAN and the internet. Could someone please explain to
me how to get the nic to not only send data, but to
recieve it also.
Thanks,
David

David,
Can you ping other machines on the network?
What do you see in Network Places | Entire Network?
In the TCP/IP set up of the network connection have you made sure that all
PC's are using the same subnet mask settings?
The best way to check if this is a settings problem is to run IPCONFIG on a
machine that IS connecting OK and also on one that is not... If you post the
results here someone will be able to tell you if this is a problem with your
settings. If it is not - we can advise you what further steps to take to
check your NIC etc...
To run IPCONFIG:
START | Run | Type "cmd" into the box and press enter
At the > prompt type IPCONFIG /ALL
