NIC Card not showing.

Good MOrning! I'll try to make this as concise as I can. I just recently
restored my PC to Factory State. It was running XP Home SP2 just fine until
what seemed to be a registry issue made it impossible to boot. After
reupdating to SP2 I noticed I couldnt not connect to the internet. It
appears..my LAN network adapter is being used to connect. I can't locate my
NIC in device manager as well. I'm getting this message in event viewer:

Security -Failure Audit
IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network interfaces on the
machine......Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

Without being a networking genius, I thought it could(?) be related. Also,
we thought I may need to open the tower, and locate and reinsert the NIC. It
came preinstalled on this PC.

Any ideas suggestions?

Good Morning

I would open the box, get the NIC name and model number, find and reinstall
the driver. If you have a driver CD from the PC manufacturer, even better,
use that.

You could also do a hardware rescan in device manager to see if it can
locate the NIC.

There's something wrong with the hardware enumeration.
Since it doesn't appear in device manager, it's hard to un-install it to
force re-detection.

However, since it seems to be present as a ghost, then this is what I'd try:
Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not
Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer

You might be able to use this article to force Device Manager to show the
devices if they have become apparently nonpresent for some strange reason.


If they show up in device manager now, you should delete them and re-boot.

Allow windows to re-detect the card and re-install it.
